8 Free Ebook Selling WordPress Themes That Still Work
The best free ebook selling WordPress themes in 2026 are BuddyX, eStore, Book Landing Page, Digital Download and Storefront. All five are on WordPress.org, all five were updated this year, and each one works with either WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads, which is what actually handles the sale. The theme decides how your book pages look; the ecommerce plugin delivers the file and takes the payment.
We rebuilt this list in August 2026 because four themes from the earlier version (BookRev Lite, Book Store, FlatBook and Book Rev) are no longer listed in the WordPress.org directory. Every theme below was checked against the directory on the day of writing, with the version number and last update date shown so you can judge how well it is maintained. We also say plainly which ones are free and which ones have a paid upgrade.

Free ebook selling WordPress themes compared
Using WordPress for self-publishing ebooks means you keep the full sale price minus payment processing, instead of the 30 to 65 percent that Amazon KDP and the big retailers take. The trade-off is that you have to build the shop. A good free theme removes most of that work: it gives you a homepage that sells, a product page that shows the cover properly, and styling for the checkout that the ecommerce plugin provides.
Before you pick a theme, pick the plugin. WooCommerce is the safe default and every theme here supports it. Easy Digital Downloads is lighter and built only for files, so if you will never ship a physical product it is the better fit. Several themes below support both.
1. BuddyX theme
BuddyX theme is our own free theme and the one we would pick if you want to sell ebooks and build a readership around them at the same time. Version 5.1.6 shipped on 13 August 2026, it is on WordPress.org with a 100 percent rating, and it styles WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads out of the box. It also styles BuddyPress, so readers can have profiles, follow the author, and discuss books in groups without a second theme.
BuddyX is responsive, passes Core Web Vitals on a default install, and ships with starter content so you are not staring at a blank homepage. The paid BuddyX Pro ($79 a year for one site) adds seven bundled plugins and more layouts, but you do not need it to start selling.
2. Reign theme
Reign theme is not free, and earlier versions of this article were wrong to say it was. The Personal licence is $99. We keep it on the list because it is the theme to move to when the free options run out: it has dedicated layouts for WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, Dokan and WC Vendors, so a single author store can grow into a multi-author marketplace without changing theme.
Reign is fully responsive, ships with demo sites you can import in one click, and the add-ons for LearnDash, LifterLMS and Sensei are $39 a year each if you later want to sell courses next to your books.
3. eStore (replaces BookRev Lite)
BookRev Lite has been removed from the WordPress.org directory, so eStore by ThemeGrill takes its place. eStore is a free WooCommerce theme built for online stores of any kind (version 1.6.12, updated 11 August 2026, 2,000+ active installs). Its homepage sections are made for products with strong cover art, which suits ebooks well, and it has a customiser-driven setup that needs no code.
Features: Multiple homepage layouts, WooCommerce product sliders, category showcases, and a sticky add-to-cart on product pages.
Pros: Actively maintained, easy to set up, looks like a shop rather than a blog.
Cons: No author or book-specific sections; it treats an ebook like any other product. The Pro version is where the extra layouts live.
4. Book Landing Page
Book Landing Page by RaraTheme is still free, still listed, and at version 1.2.9 (April 2026, 700+ installs) it remains the best one-book theme in the directory. It is designed for authors and publishers who want to sell a single title: a hero with the cover, a synopsis, an author bio, a reviews strip and a buy section, all on one page.
Features: Customisable sections for book details, author bio, testimonials and purchase options, with buy buttons that can point to WooCommerce or straight to Amazon, Gumroad or Payhip.
Pros: Quick to set up, and a single-page focus usually converts better than a full store for one title.
Cons: Not suited to a catalogue of many books. The Pro version adds more sections and colour options.
5. Storefront (replaces Book Store)
The Book Store theme listed here previously is gone from the directory. For a full online bookstore with dozens or hundreds of titles, Storefront is the free theme we now recommend. It is built by Automattic, the company behind WooCommerce, which means every WooCommerce update is tested against it first. Version 4.6.2 (December 2025) has 90,000+ active installs.
Features: Full WooCommerce integration, product category layouts, a clean checkout, and a large ecosystem of free and paid child themes.
Pros: Nothing breaks. It is the most stable base for a store of any size, and it is genuinely free.
Cons: Plain out of the box. You will want a child theme or some customiser work to make a bookstore feel like a bookstore.
6. Digital Download (replaces FlatBook)
FlatBook is no longer in the directory. Digital Download, also by RaraTheme (version 1.1.6, March 2026, 300+ installs), is the closest free replacement and in some ways a better fit: it was designed specifically for selling files such as ebooks, templates and audio, and it supports Easy Digital Downloads as well as WooCommerce.
Features: Homepage sections for featured downloads, a pricing table, testimonials and a newsletter block, with EDD product styling included.
Pros: Purpose-built for digital goods, so checkout and download pages look right without extra CSS.
Cons: Small install base, and the more distinctive layouts are in the Pro version.

7. Author (replaces Book Rev)
Book Rev has dropped out of the directory. Author, by Compete Themes (version 1.57, June 2026, 3,000+ installs), fills the author-website slot. It is a free, fast, text-first theme designed for writers, with a sidebar profile that keeps your photo, bio and book links visible on every page.
Features: Author sidebar with social links, excellent typography, WooCommerce compatibility and no page builder dependency.
Pros: Loads quickly, reads well, and has no paid upsell at all.
Cons: It is a writing theme first and a shop theme second. Use it when your books sell from a blog, not when the shop is the main event.
8. OceanWP
OceanWP (version 4.2.3, 18 August 2026, 500,000+ installs) is here for people who want one theme that can do an ebook shop now and something else later. Its free version includes WooCommerce styling, a floating add-to-cart bar, quick view and a native off-canvas cart, which are features most free themes reserve for Pro.
Features: Deep WooCommerce options in the customiser, demo imports, and compatibility with every major page builder.
Pros: Huge user base, frequent updates, and the free tier is unusually generous for shops.
Cons: More settings than a single-author site needs, and the premium add-on bundle is pushed hard in the admin.
How to set up an ebook store with a free theme
The steps are the same whichever theme you choose.
- Install WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads and connect Stripe or PayPal.
- Install the theme from Appearance, Themes, Add New and import its starter content if it has any.
- Create one product per book. Mark it as virtual and downloadable, upload the EPUB and PDF, and set a download limit and expiry so links cannot be shared forever.
- Add a sample chapter as a free product or a PDF preview. It is the single best conversion tool for ebooks.
- Turn on an email plugin so buyers get their download link again if they lose it.
