Why marketplaces are different

Marketplaces are not just stores with multiple sellers.

A multi-vendor marketplace has a fundamentally different operating model from a standard store. Vendors are users with their own dashboards, product catalogs, payout schedules, tax positions, and dispute history. Commissions split every sale. Refunds cascade. Customer support has to route between platform and vendor.

The default WooCommerce data model handles none of this. Multi-vendor plugins (Dokan, WCFM, WC Vendors) add the vendor layer; custom builds add the rules engine that makes the marketplace actually run. We have shipped both shapes and we will recommend the right one in discovery.

What we build

Six capabilities every marketplace eventually needs.

Vendor onboarding, commission rules, payouts, product types, reviews and disputes, multi-currency. Built right means scaling from 10 vendors to 1,000 without rewriting.

01

Vendor onboarding that scales

KYC document upload, identity verification, automated approval rules, and welcome-flow email sequences. New vendors get from signup to first listing without an admin in the loop for routine cases. Edge cases (high-risk countries, restricted categories) route to manual review.

Self-serve onboarding with human-in-the-loop for edge cases.

02

Commission rules per vendor and category

Tiered commission rates by vendor tier, by product category, by sales volume threshold. Promotional commission adjustments (lower vendor cut for launch periods, higher for top-performers). Rules engine that handles overlapping conditions cleanly.

Granular commission logic across hundreds of vendors.

03

Payout automation

Stripe Connect, PayPal Payouts, Razorpay (India), or bank transfer. Automated payout schedules (weekly, biweekly, monthly), minimum threshold rules, holdback for refund risk, and tax-form collection where required (W-9 for US, GST for India).

Vendors paid on schedule, automatically.

04

Multi-vendor product types

Physical products, digital downloads, services, bookings, subscriptions, and rentals - all under one vendor catalog. Each product type with its own checkout flow, fulfillment workflow, and vendor dashboard view.

Six product types, one marketplace.

05

Reviews, ratings, and disputes

Verified-purchase reviews, vendor rating aggregates, disputed-order resolution workflow with admin escalation, and refund-handling that allocates between vendor and platform correctly. Trust signals customers and vendors both need.

Review and dispute systems built right.

06

Multi-currency and multi-language

Vendor sets product price in their currency; customers see prices converted to their locale. Multi-language storefront via WPML or Polylang, with vendor-side translation flows. Tax and shipping rules per-region.

Currencies and languages, both layers.

4+

multi-vendor plugin stacks we have shipped in production

Dokan, WCFM, WC Vendors, and fully custom on WooCommerce. We pick the right one per project in discovery.

Platforms we ship on

Four multi-vendor stacks, picked per project.

The choice is not religious. It is matched to your category mix, vendor scale, and budget. We will tell you the trade-offs honestly in discovery.

01

Dokan

The most-installed WP multi-vendor plugin. Strong vendor dashboard, marketplace patterns. We extend it heavily and have shipped Reign Dokan Addon for marketplace-themed storefronts.

Dokan for established WC marketplaces.

02

WCFM Marketplace

Highly modular alternative with strong B2B features (bulk orders, quote requests, vendor groups). Reign WCFM Addon adds the marketplace UX layer. Good for service marketplaces and B2B.

WCFM for B2B and service marketplaces.

03

WC Vendors

Lightweight option for marketplaces that need fewer features but cleaner code. Reign WC Vendors Addon ships with us. Good for mid-size marketplaces with custom requirements.

WC Vendors for custom builds.

04

Custom on top of WooCommerce

When the off-the-shelf plugins do not fit (highly custom commission logic, unusual product types, marketplace-of-marketplaces structures), we build a custom multi-vendor layer directly on WooCommerce. Owns the data model end-to-end.

Full custom when the plugins constrain.

Common questions

Frequently asked

  1. Which multi-vendor plugin should I pick?

It depends on what you sell and how big the marketplace will get. Dokan is the most-installed and has the strongest community; WCFM is more modular and better for B2B; WC Vendors is the lightest. We will recommend the right one in discovery based on your category mix, projected vendor count, and your team's WordPress comfort level.

  2. Can you migrate us from one multi-vendor plugin to another?

Yes. We have migrated marketplaces from Dokan to WCFM, WC Vendors to Dokan, and custom builds onto established plugins. Migration covers vendor accounts, product catalog, order history, commissions, and review data with zero downtime cutover.

  3. How do payouts work?

Vendor sets up their payout method (Stripe Connect, PayPal Payouts, Razorpay for India, or bank transfer in supported regions). Automated payout runs on the schedule you set (we recommend weekly). Holdback rules for high-risk vendors and tax-form collection are built in.

  4. Do you handle KYC and identity verification?

Yes. We integrate with Stripe Identity, Persona, or custom document upload + manual review depending on your compliance requirements. KYC is required for marketplaces processing payments in most jurisdictions; we will scope it correctly to your operating regions.

  5. What about taxes and accounting?

Tax handling depends heavily on your operating regions and product types. We integrate with TaxJar or Avalara for US sales tax, configure GST/VAT correctly for India and EU, and produce reconciliation reports for accounting. We do not provide tax advice; we provide the technical implementation that supports the tax position your accountant defines.

  6. Can you build for B2B with bulk orders and quotes?

Yes. B2B marketplace patterns (request-for-quote, bulk pricing, net-30 invoicing, customer-specific catalogs) typically run on WCFM with custom extensions, or as fully custom builds on WooCommerce. We have shipped both shapes.

  7. What does it cost?

Multi-vendor builds are scope-dependent. A straightforward marketplace using Dokan with standard configurations is a fixed-price block. A custom marketplace with bespoke commission logic, KYC, and multi-currency is a multi-month engagement. Discovery call is free; fixed-price quote within 48 hours of scope lock.
