Why We Rebuilt Everything: The Future of Wbcom & Sovereign Communities
For over a decade, Wbcom Designs had a clear mission: build the best WordPress themes and add-ons for community-driven websites.
If you have been with us for a while, you probably know us through Reign, BuddyX, or specialized theme extensions like REIGN GeoDirectory. You built your sites using our themes wrapped around third-party plugins, BuddyPress for social feeds, rtMedia for photos, bbPress for forums, GeoDirectory for listings, LearnDash for courses, and WP Job Manager for hiring.
It worked for a time. But as WordPress evolved, that model hit a wall.
Today, I want to talk openly about why that traditional model broke down, what we built to solve it once and for all, where we are taking the Wbcom ecosystem next, and what this means for your existing sites.
“We realized that offering themes for software we didn’t control was a dead end. To give you a fast, reliable, sovereign website, we needed 100% in-house code control.”
The Problem We Faced Together: The Third-Party Plugin Trap
When you buy a theme from us, you expect your site to run smoothly.
Under the old model, your site’s core functionality didn’t belong to us. It depended on a fragile web of third-party plugins.
When a third-party plugin pushed a breaking update, introduced database bloat, or delayed critical bug fixes for months, your site broke. You reached out to our support team, and often, our hands were tied. We had to ask you to wait for another developer team to release a patch.
When third-party plugins failed you, you lost trust in your site. And eventually, you abandoned the theme too.
The Big Pivot: From Theme Vendor to Sovereign Community OS
We spent the last few years quietly engineering a complete, modern product ecosystem from scratch.
We threw out legacy code habits. We stopped storing every custom feature inside the bloated wp_posts database table. We built on custom database tables, block-first Gutenberg architecture, and clean REST APIs.
We created a self-hosted alternative to expensive SaaS platforms like Circle.so, Skool, Kajabi, and Mighty Networks.
| Feature / Model | SaaS Platforms (Circle / Kajabi / Skool) | Wbcom Sovereign Stack |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing Structure | $99 - $399 / month forever | Free core + Flat annual pricing |
| Transaction Fees | Up to 10% platform cuts | 0% Platform Fees |
| Data Ownership | Hosted in proprietary silos | 100% Owned WordPress DB |
| Architecture | Locked SaaS cloud | Modular standalone plugins + OS |
SaaS tools charge you every single month and hold your member data hostage. Our new stack gives you total data sovereignty on WordPress with zero transaction fees.
What We Have Built: The Wbcom Product Ecosystem
At the center of our new lineup sits BuddyNext, surrounded by 13 standalone companion apps.
Every single app is built with a dual architecture: it runs 100% standalone on any WordPress site with zero extra bloat, or it snaps natively into BuddyNext as an integrated app module.
1. BuddyNext, The Community OS
Our flagship standalone alternative to BuddyPress and BuddyBoss. It handles activity feeds, Spaces (groups), member profiles, directory, and native moderation (reports, strikes, shadow-bans).
BuddyNext Pro adds native Stripe membership tiers directly into the core. You no longer need to bolt on MemberPress or Paid Memberships Pro just to charge for community access.
2. Jetonomy, Forums & Discussions
A high-performance alternative to bbPress and wpForo. Built on custom wp_jt_* database tables with 6 automated Trust Levels (TL0 - TL5) for community self-moderation, Q&A boards, and an Ideas board with a Planned-to-Shipped workflow. Explore Jetonomy.
3. MediaVerse (WPMediaVerse), Photo/Video Galleries & DMs
Our in-house replacement for rtMedia and MediaPress. It provides Instagram and Flickr-style photo grids, 1:1 private messaging, voice notes, and built-in OpenAI Vision auto-moderation. Discover MediaVerse.
4. Learnomy, LMS & Online School
A standalone online school engine built to replace LearnDash and Teachable. Keep 100% of your course revenue with direct Stripe checkout, signed verifiable certificates (with LinkedIn QR verification), anti-cheat tab-switch tracking, and instructor revenue sharing. Check out Learnomy.
5. Listora, Directory & Listings
A directory plugin built to replace GeoDirectory and Business Directory Plugin. It handles up to 100,000 listings using OpenStreetMap out of the box, meaning zero Google Maps API fees. Includes a “Needs Marketplace” where visitors post what they need and businesses respond. See Listora.
6. WP Career Board, Job Board & Hiring
A block-native replacement for WP Job Manager. Features Google Jobs Schema, candidate screening questions, Kanban application pipelines, and group-scoped job boards. Explore WP Career Board.
7. WB Gamification, Universal Engagement (100% Free)
Points, badges, leaderboards, cohort leagues, daily login streaks, and a points redemption store. Unlike GamiPress or myCred, which charge $39 to $299 for every single integration add-on, WB Gamification is 100% free with all integrations included in the core. Download WB Gamification.
8. Eventonomy, Standalone Events & RSVP
A block-native events and ticketing engine with zero per-ticket platform fees, recurring events, waitlists, and guest magic links. Learn more about Eventonomy.
9. WB Ad Manager, WP Sell Services, WP Stories, WB Member Wiki & MediaShield
We’ve also shipped specialized companion tools for monetization and engagement: WB Ad Manager for ad rotators & affiliate cloaking, WP Sell Services for Fiverr-style service marketplaces, WP Stories for social stories, WB Member Wiki for collaborative docs, and MediaShield for video DRM & dynamic watermarking.
What We Are Working On Next: Turnkey Native Mobile Apps & Deeper AI
We aren’t stopping at web plugins. Here is what our engineering team is actively building:
Turnkey Native Mobile Apps (iOS & Android)
Under the old third-party plugin model, creating a native mobile app for customers was a nightmare. Every plugin had different code standards, legacy APIs, and messy database calls.
Because our entire new product line is built on modern REST APIs, clean DB tables, and OpenAPI specs, we are building a unified mobile app stack.
You will soon be able to deploy a native mobile app for an individual module (like a standalone Learnomy course app or Jetonomy forum app) or a complete combined BuddyNext community app, without custom development fees.
AI Built Into Every Core
We are expanding AI capabilities across the entire suite. Instead of installing extra third-party scripts, you get native AI moderation, thread summarization, smart curriculum draft generators, AI candidate matching for job boards, and semantic search.
What This Means for Your Existing Site (We Are Not Abandoning You)
If you are currently running Reign, BuddyX, REIGN GeoDirectory, or our legacy BuddyPress add-ons, hear this loud and clear:
We are not discarding our legacy products.
Your existing themes and add-ons will continue to receive updates, bug fixes, and compatibility maintenance. We are not forcing anyone to migrate or break a working website.
However, if you want to eliminate third-party plugin bloat, stop paying high SaaS fees, speed up your database, and prepare your site for turnkey mobile apps and AI, this new ecosystem is ready for you.
