In this tutorial you will write the short summary that goes with your post when it is shared. You need the free WB Member Blog plugin, installed and active, and a role that may write. It takes about two minutes. There are four steps. Open the Social sharing fold. Write the summary. Leave it empty if you like. Then save it with the post.

Step one. Open the Social sharing fold. On the writing page, find Post settings on the right, and click Social sharing. It has one box, Summary for social sharing. Its text is shown when your post is shared on social media.

Step two. Write the summary. Click the box and write a sentence or two about the post. Write for someone who has not seen the post yet. A shared link can show this text with your title and featured image. The counter under the box shows how many characters you have used, against a target of one hundred and sixty. The note beside it tells you when the length is good.

Step three. Leave it empty if you like. With nothing in the box, the plugin writes a summary from your post for you. The note beside the counter says so: auto-generated from content. Your own words are the better choice when you have the time.

Step four. Save it with the post. The summary is stored with the post when you use the buttons at the foot of the form. It works the same whether you publish the post or keep it as a draft.

That is all four. The Social sharing fold, a summary written, the option to leave it empty, and saving it with the post. Your post now has its own summary. Next in this series: Preview a post and write without distractions.
