In this tutorial you will let members add their own categories, or block the ones they should not use. You need the free WB Member Blog plugin, installed and active. It takes about two minutes. There are five steps. Open the Content tab. Let members add categories. Block some categories. See the add button. Then see the list a member gets.

Step one. Open the Content tab. Go to WB Plugins, then Member Blog, then Content. The first card is Categories. It controls which categories members can use, and whether they can make new ones.

Step two. Let members add categories. Allow custom categories starts off. Tick it, and members can create a new category while they write. A new category is ready to use at once. Editors and administrators can always add categories, whatever this box says. Click Save Settings at the foot of the tab.

Step three. Block some categories. Every category on your site has a box here. With more than eight categories, a search box appears. Type in it to find one. Tick a category to block it. Members cannot put a post in a blocked category. Leave every box unticked to allow them all. The count beside the search box shows how many are blocked. Then click Save Settings.

Step four. See the add button. On the writing page, the plus button beside Category adds a new one. Here it shows for the site owner. Click it, type a name, and click Add. With Allow custom categories ticked, every member who can write gets this button too.

Step five. See the list a member gets. This member has no plus button, because the box is off. Open the Category list. Nothing is blocked on this site, so every category is in this list. It shows five at a time. Scroll for the rest. A blocked category would be missing.

That is all five. The Content tab, adding categories, blocking some, the add button, and the list a member gets. You now decide where member posts can go. Next in this series: Set image sizes and types members can upload.
