WooCommerce · Free plugin · Document previews

Let buyers turn a few pages before they pay.

A preview button on the product page for PDFs, eBooks, and Office files.

Buyers of eBooks, templates, and reports want to see a few pages before committing. Document Preview adds a preview button to WooCommerce product pages so shoppers can read a sample PDF, Word file, spreadsheet or presentation in a popup. The sample is its own upload, separate from the file they get at checkout, so you decide how much of the document sells the rest.

How it works

Three steps between a file and a sold document.

The whole plugin is one field on the product screen and one button on the product page. Everything else is the popup doing its job.

  1. 01

Attach a document to the product

Open the product in the WordPress editor and fill the Preview Documents box. Upload the sample to the media library, or point at a document already living on Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or Dropbox. More than one file can hang off a single product.

No template edits. No shortcode to place.

  2. 02

A preview button appears on the product page

The button renders on the single product page as soon as a file is attached, directly after the add to cart button, carrying the document name you typed. There is no settings screen to visit first, because the free plugin has no options to set.

    Works on any WooCommerce store.

  3. 03

The buyer reads it in a popup

Clicking the button opens a 900 by 700 pixel popup over the product page, with the document rendered inside it by the Google document viewer. The buyer scrolls the sample and decides without losing their place in the catalogue.

Fixed size popup, no second tab.

What it previews

Eight file types uploaded, or linked straight from the cloud.

Documents

Uploaded to the media library

  • PDF
  • DOC
  • DOCX
  • TXT

Spreadsheets and slides

The same preview button, the same popup

  • XLS
  • XLSX
  • PPT
  • PPTX

Linked, not uploaded

No duplicate copy in WordPress

  • Google Docs
  • Google Sheets
  • Google Slides
  • OneDrive
  • SharePoint
  • Dropbox

More than one file per product

Attach several documents to a single listing when one sample is not enough to show what the buyer is getting.

Still works on localhost

A public viewer cannot reach a document sitting on your laptop, so on a local, .test or .dev host the plugin switches to its own built-in viewers instead. Previews keep rendering while you are still building the store.

Access

A sample sells the file. You decide how much of it is the sample.

  • The popup is the whole surface

The document opens in a popup over the product page. No second tab, no separate viewer page, no scroll back to find the add to cart button.

  • No template edits to get there

Attach a file on the product edit screen and the button renders itself. There is nothing to place, register, or style before it works.

  • The sample is its own upload

The preview document is a separate file from the one WooCommerce delivers at checkout. Attach the opening chapter, the sample worksheet, the first ten slides, and the product file stays exactly as it was.

Pricing

Free previews the file. Pro hands the field to your vendors.

The free plugin adds preview buttons on any WooCommerce store, on as many sites as you like. Pro replaces it with a version that carries vendor dashboard uploads for Dokan, WCFM, and WC Vendors, button position and colour control, and category control. Pro switches the free plugin off when you activate it. Read the refund policy.

Before you install

Questions store owners ask about document previews.

What does the plugin actually add?

A preview button on WooCommerce single product pages. Shoppers click it and read the attached PDF, Word file, spreadsheet, or presentation in a popup before they buy.

Which file types are supported?

PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, and TXT, plus documents linked from Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Dropbox.

Do I need to write any code?

No. Attach a document on the product edit screen and the preview button appears on the product page on its own. There is no shortcode to place and no template to edit.

Which file does a shopper actually see?

The one you upload into the Preview Documents box, which is a separate file from the download WooCommerce delivers after checkout. Attach an excerpt if you would rather the whole document was not readable before purchase, because the preview is a public sample and not an access-controlled one.

How big is the popup?

It opens at 900 by 700 pixels over the product page and the document renders inside it through Google's document viewer. On a local, .test or .dev host the plugin falls back to its own built-in viewers instead, since a public viewer cannot reach a file on your machine.

Is it really free?

Yes, on unlimited sites, with community support. Woo Document Preview Pro is the paid edition for marketplaces, and it replaces this plugin rather than sitting alongside it.

Does it work on a multi-vendor marketplace?

The free plugin works on any WooCommerce store, including one running a marketplace plugin, but the preview field stays on the WordPress product screen. Woo Document Preview Pro is what moves it onto the Dokan, WCFM, and WC Vendors product forms.
