The situation
DMX Dance Company teaches social dance rooted in Chicago steppin’. The teaching happens in rooms: group classes, private lessons, workshop weekends and events. On top of that it runs two programs with their own audiences. One is for dancers who want rhythm-led, expressive movement. The other trains instructors in other communities, through the Budland Network.
A website that lists classes could not carry any of that. A student wants to learn between classes. An instructor in another city wants materials, a community and a reason to stay. A dancer who has been coming for years wants something back for staying.
Where we started
The company already had its programs, its content and a loyal following. What it lacked was a place where each person landed in the right part of it. So the build began with the question of who gets what: which courses, groups and private content belong to which level of membership. The platform followed from that answer.
What we built
A membership community on BuddyBoss, built around the way the company actually teaches.
- Membership tiers. Six levels, each with its own access rules, so a member sees the courses, groups and private content that belong to their level.
- Courses connected to membership. Online courses are tied to the membership level, so access follows the plan a member is on.
- Private content. A private media gallery for members, and a welcome video page for new ones.
- Automatic member discounts. Members get their discount without entering anything.
- Community. A news feed, groups and a member directory, with profiles and activity feeds restyled to match the brand and checked on phones.
- Events and the shop. An events calendar, and a shop connected to a print-on-demand service.
- An affiliate programme. A custom plugin for affiliates, with its own area on the site.
- Billing and email. Memberships on ongoing monthly billing, reliable email, and the member list connected to the company’s CRM.
What it makes possible
A studio that grows beyond the people who can fit in a room. Students keep learning between classes, the community keeps them connected, and each tier gives members a reason to move up.
