BuddyPress already carries member types, and then leaves them out of the places members look. This plugin adds the missing controls to BuddyPress's own member type screen: offer a type on the signup form, give each type its own tab in the member directory, keep a type out of that directory, and map a type to a WordPress role. One member can hold several types at once.

How it works
There is no separate settings page to learn. The plugin adds rows to the member type form, adds a field type to profile fields, and keeps the two in step with each other.
Open a member type on the screen BuddyPress already gives you and the plugin's rows sit on the same form: show this type on the registration form, pre-select it for new visitors, offer it on profile edit, keep it out of the member directory, and map it to a WordPress role.
Profile fields gain two new field types. Member Types is a checkbox list, so a member can hold several types at once. The single-select variant allows exactly one. Put either one in the signup field group and members classify themselves as they register.
Saving the field sets the real BuddyPress member type rather than a copy of it. A change made on signup, on profile edit, or through the bulk change on the Users list updates the member type, the profile field and the mapped role together.
In the member directory
Classification is only useful if visitors can act on it. Picking a tab scopes the member list to that type, so a visitor looking for a coach reads a page of coaches instead of everyone.
Each member type that has a directory gets its own tab beside All Members, with the number of members in it. Both directory templates BuddyPress ships are covered, so the tabs appear whether the theme runs Legacy or Nouveau.
A type with no members yet does not get a tab. It appears the moment the first member is classified, so a directory built for six categories does not launch with five dead ends.
Tick Exclude from Members Directory and members of that type drop out of the main member list for anyone who is not an administrator. The type keeps working everywhere else. The form will not let you tick Exclude and Has Directory at the same time, because the two contradict each other.
Running Youzify on the directory? The plugin stands its own tab output down on that template, so the tabs are never printed twice.
Types and roles
Choose one role on the member type and the plugin applies it every time that type is assigned: when a new member is activated, when a member saves their profile field, and when an admin changes the type for a batch of users.
Applying a type clears the roles a member already had and sets the mapped one. If User Role Editor is active the plugin adds every mapped role instead, so a member holding two types keeps both roles.
Accounts that can administer the site are skipped by the role change, so classifying members cannot lock you out of your own site.
The plugin does not restrict posts, pages or groups by member type. It sets the WordPress role, and whatever already enforces roles on your site decides what that role can reach.
Pricing
Everything on this page is in the one free download. There is no paid edition holding anything back, no licence key to enter, and no site limit. BuddyPress needs to be active, and the profile fields component needs to be on for the signup and profile field.

With User Role Editor active every mapped role is added instead, so someone holding two types keeps both roles. Administrators are skipped, so a type assignment cannot demote your own account.

If you need content restriction, it has to come from whatever already enforces roles on your site, driven by the role the type applies.
BuddyPress. The plugin deactivates itself with a notice if BuddyPress is not active. The signup and profile fields also need the BuddyPress profile fields component switched on, since the member type field is a profile field type.
