BuddyPress · Free plugin · v3.8.0

A profile tells you what a member posted, not whether to trust them.

BuddyPress Member Reviews gives every member a reputation other members wrote. Logged-in members rate each other out of five stars on the criteria you define, the plugin averages those scores, and the result shows on the profile header, on the members directory and in a Reviews tab. Nobody can review their own profile.

How it works

One average, three places it lands.

A member rates another member out of five stars. The plugin rolls every score that member has received into one average, then renders it on each surface below. There is no separate setup per surface.

  1. 01

    On the profile header

The averaged score sits with the member's name and avatar, so it is the first thing a visitor reads. The same hook is wired for BuddyPress, for BuddyBoss Platform and for Youzify profile headers.

  2. 02

    On the members directory

Every entry in the directory listing carries its rating and an Add Review button, so members compare without opening profiles one at a time. Both are on by default and each can be switched off on its own.

  3. 03

In a Reviews tab on the profile

The full history lives in its own profile tab, paginated at five per page by default. Rename the tab to Feedback, Testimonials or whatever your community calls it, singular and plural.

Set it up your way

You decide what gets rated, and what it is called.

A rating is only useful if it measures the thing your community cares about. The plugin ships two criteria to start from, Member Response and Member Skills, and you rename, remove or add your own from the settings screen. Each criterion gets its own five-star row on the form, and the reviewer scores them separately.

  • Prefer a single score? Switch multi-criteria off and the form collapses to one overall five-star rating.
  • Rename the tab. Singular and plural labels are both editable, so Reviews can become Feedback, Endorsement or Testimonial.
  • Match your palette. The star colour is a setting, and version 3.8.0 moved the whole review front end onto CSS variables a theme can recolour.

The score also renders away from the profile

  • Widget BP Member Review Widget A ranked list for any sidebar, set to top rated or most reviewed.
  • Widget BP Displayed Member Rating Widget The rating of whichever member profile is currently open.
  • Shortcode [bupr_display_top_members] The same ranked list on any page or post. Takes title, total_member, type and avatar.

Moderation

Reputation is only worth something if it can be trusted.

Two rules the plugin enforces on its own, and nine switches you control. Everything below ships in the free download, because there is no paid edition holding anything back.

Always on

Nobody rates themselves

The server rejects a review whose author and target are the same member, and the Add Review button never renders on your own profile. It is not a setting, so it cannot be switched off by accident.

The reviewer is who the session says

Version 3.8.0 stopped trusting the member id posted by the browser and reads the logged-in session instead, which closes off forged authorship and repeat submissions that dodge the one-review limit.

Notifications follow the same rule set. A member gets a BuddyPress notification and an email when a review lands, admins get an alert when one is waiting for approval, and each of those can be switched off on its own.

Yours to set, with the shipped default

  • Auto approve reviews On Reviews publish immediately. Switch it off and every new review is held as a draft until an admin approves it.
  • Reviewer roles All roles Pick which user roles are allowed to leave a review.
  • Reviewee roles All roles Pick which user roles are allowed to receive one, so you can rate coaches without rating everybody.
  • Member reporting On Members flag a review they think is unfair. Past a threshold you set, five by default, it hides itself and waits for you.
  • Allow update On A member can edit the review they wrote. The endpoint checks ownership before it saves.
  • Multiple reviews On Turn it off to hold each member to one review per person.
  • Owner replies On The member being reviewed can answer, once per review.
  • Anonymous reviews Off Turn it on and the byline reads "An anonymous user" instead of a name.
  • Publish to activity Off Turn it on and new reviews appear in the BuddyPress activity stream with their stars.

Pricing

Free, and not the trimmed version of something.

One download, no licence key, no site limit. Nothing on this page is held behind a tier, because Wbcom plugins never gate features by licence. Requires BuddyPress or BuddyBoss Platform with the Members component active.

Before you install

Questions community operators ask.

  1. 01

What does BuddyPress Member Reviews do?

It lets logged-in members rate and review each other on their BuddyPress profiles. Scores are averaged per member and shown on the profile header, on the members directory and in a Reviews tab on the profile.

  2. 02

What rating scale does it use?

Five stars. A reviewer scores each criterion you have defined out of five, and the plugin averages every review a member has received into one figure shown beside their name.

  3. 03

Can a member review their own profile?

No. The Add Review button never appears on your own profile, and the server rejects the submission outright if the reviewer and the member being reviewed are the same person. It is a hard rule, not a setting.

  4. 04

Do two members need to be connected before one can review the other?

No. There is no friendship or following requirement. Who may review whom is decided by user role instead: one setting lists the roles allowed to leave reviews, another lists the roles allowed to receive them.

  5. 05

Can I rate members on more than one thing?

Yes, and it is on by default. Two criteria are created when you activate, Member Response and Member Skills, and you can rename them, delete them or add your own. If you would rather collect one overall score, switch multi-criteria off.

  6. 06

Do reviews go live straight away?

By default yes. Turn off Auto Approve Reviews and every new review is saved as a draft instead, waiting for an admin to approve it, with an email alert when one is pending.

  7. 07

What stops an unfair review from sitting there?

Members can report a review. Once the number of reports reaches the threshold you set, five by default, the review hides itself automatically. In the admin, each review carries a Report Details box with dismiss and resolve actions, and the Reviews list has a flagged filter and bulk actions.

  8. 08

Can the person being reviewed respond?

Yes. Owner replies are on by default and the member being reviewed can answer once per review. Reviewers can also edit their own review afterwards while the Allow update setting is on.

  9. 09

Can I show top rated members somewhere other than a profile?

Yes, three ways. The BP Member Review Widget renders a ranked list in any sidebar, set to top rated or most reviewed. The BP Displayed Member Rating Widget shows the rating of whichever profile is open. And the [bupr_display_top_members] shortcode puts the ranked list on any page or post, with title, total_member, type and avatar attributes.

  10. 10

Does it work with Youzify or BuddyBoss?

Both. Youzify profile headers get the rating and the Add Review button through their own hooks, and review activity is relabelled for Youzify walls. BuddyBoss Platform is supported with its own profile header and directory hooks, and the plugin checks your BuddyBoss version on activation.

  11. 11

Can I change the wording and the colour?

Yes. The tab label is editable in both singular and plural, so Reviews can read as Feedback or Testimonials, and the star colour is a setting. Version 3.8.0 also moved the review front end onto CSS variables, so a theme can recolour any surface from one place, in light or dark.

  12. 12

    Is it translated?

German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese (Brazil) ship with the plugin, alongside the translation template and a WPML configuration file. Version 3.8.0 fixed a bug that stopped JavaScript translations loading at all in production.
