PeepSo LifterLMS Integration: Social Learning Setup Guide
PeepSo gives you a social network inside WordPress and LifterLMS gives you courses, but out of the box they ignore each other. Students have a LifterLMS dashboard on one page and a PeepSo profile on another, and nothing a learner does in a course ever shows up in the community. Our PeepSo LifterLMS Integration add-on closes that gap: it moves the LifterLMS dashboard into the PeepSo profile and posts course milestones to the activity stream. This guide explains what the integration does, how to set it up, and how to tune it so the feed stays useful rather than noisy.
We first released the add-on in 2021 after repeated requests from PeepSo site owners running LifterLMS. PeepSo has since shipped official integrations for LearnDash, Tutor LMS and MasterStudy, but not for LifterLMS, so this add-on is still the route for that pairing. The setup below reflects LifterLMS 10.x and current PeepSo releases.
Why put course activity inside the community
The argument for combining an LMS with a social network is completion. Learners who study alongside other people finish more often than learners who study alone. That only works if the community can see what people are studying. When a member’s enrolment, quiz pass or certificate appears in the feed, three things happen: classmates notice and comment, lurkers see that the course is active and enrol, and the learner gets a small public reward for progress.
The second argument is navigation. A student should not need to know which part of the site is “the LMS” and which part is “the community”. Putting My Courses, My Grades and My Certificates on the PeepSo profile means one place to log in and one place to look.
What the integration adds
LifterLMS tabs on the PeepSo profile
The add-on registers the LifterLMS Student Dashboard endpoints as PeepSo profile tabs. Each can be switched on or off by the admin:
- My Courses
- My Grades
- My Membership
- My Achievements
- My Certificates
- Notifications
- Edit Account
- Redeem a voucher
The content is LifterLMS’s own dashboard markup rendered inside the PeepSo profile layout, so theme styling for the dashboard carries over and LifterLMS updates do not break it.
Activity stream posts
Six course events can generate a PeepSo activity post, each with an on/off toggle and an editable message template:

Each template accepts the student’s name and the course or quiz title, so “Varun passed the quiz Module 3 Assessment in WordPress Security Basics” is generated automatically.
Group auto-assignment
If you run PeepSo Groups (a PeepSo add-on), the integration can join a student to a chosen PeepSo group when they enrol in a course. That gives every course a private discussion space without anyone having to find and join it.
Requirements
- WordPress 6.4 or later, PHP 8.1 or later.
- PeepSo core (free) with the Profile and Activity components active. PeepSo Groups is required only for the group assignment feature.
- LifterLMS (the free core plugin is enough; paid LifterLMS add-ons are not required).
- The PeepSo LifterLMS Integration add-on zip from your Wbcom Designs account. Installation and configuration docs are at docs.wbcomdesigns.com.
Step-by-step setup
- Install the add-on. Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the zip, then Activate. If PeepSo or LifterLMS is missing, the plugin shows an admin notice and stays inactive until both are present.
- Open the settings. Go to PeepSo → Configuration → PeepSo LifterLMS Addon. You will see two areas: the tabs display settings and the activity settings.
- Choose profile tabs. Under “LifterLMS Tabs Display”, tick the tabs you want. Start with My Courses, My Grades and My Certificates. Leave Edit Account and Redeem a voucher off unless you actively sell vouchers; PeepSo already has its own account editing screen.
- Configure activities. Work through the six activity types. Turn Quiz Failed off. Edit the message templates so they match your site’s tone; the defaults are neutral and a bit formal.
- Map groups (optional). If PeepSo Groups is active, open a course in LifterLMS (Courses → edit course) and look for the PeepSo Group setting in the course options. Pick the group students should join on enrolment. Do this per course.
- Test as a student. Create a test member, enrol them in a course, complete a lesson and pass a quiz. Check the profile tabs populate and the activity posts appear in the main feed and on the member’s profile.
The whole setup takes about fifteen minutes once the plugins are installed.
Tuning the feed so it stays useful
The most common mistake we see on social learning sites is too much automated activity. A community where every other post is “X completed a lesson” trains members to skip the feed. Some rules we apply:
- Post milestones, not steps. Enrolment, completion and certificates are milestones. Individual lessons and most quizzes are steps. The integration does not post lesson completions for this reason.
- Let quiz posts earn their place. If a course has one final assessment, a “passed” post is meaningful. If it has twenty knowledge checks, turn quiz posts off for that site.
- Write templates in the second person where PeepSo shows them to the learner. “You earned the certificate for…” reads better on the learner’s own profile, while the feed copy uses the name.
- Use group feeds for the detail. Course groups can carry the finer-grained discussion and questions. The main feed is for milestones and human posts.
Privacy considerations
Course progress is personal data, and some learners do not want classmates to see that they are enrolled in, say, a career change course. Two mitigations: PeepSo’s per-post privacy settings apply to integration posts, so members can restrict or delete them from their own activity like any other post; and you can disable enrolment posts site-wide while keeping completion and certificate posts, which learners almost always want shared.
If you operate under GDPR, mention the activity posting in your privacy notice and in the course enrolment confirmation so it is not a surprise.
Choosing a theme for a PeepSo + LifterLMS site
PeepSo works with most themes, but a course site benefits from one that styles both the LMS and the social layer. Reign for PeepSo ships PeepSo-specific layouts, and adding the Reign LifterLMS add-on gives course grids, lesson layouts and course reviews on member profiles. A worked example: a 40-student cohort course
A client of ours runs an eight-week project management course for cohorts of about 40 people. Before the integration, the PeepSo feed went quiet between live calls and the course forum (a separate bbPress install) saw a handful of posts a week. After setup, each cohort got its own PeepSo group mapped from the course, enrolment posts landed on the main feed during launch week, and completion posts started arriving from week six.
Two things changed. Members who had not started the course saw classmates enrolling and completing and asked about the next intake, which the owner now answers in the feed. And the per-cohort group replaced the forum entirely, because learners were already in PeepSo for the profile tabs and did not need a second login. Completion for the following cohort rose from roughly half to just under two thirds. That is one site, not a controlled study, but it matches what we see elsewhere when course progress becomes visible to peers.
Troubleshooting
Tabs show but are empty
The LifterLMS Student Dashboard page is missing or unassigned. Go to LifterLMS → Settings → Accounts and check that a page is set as the Student Dashboard, and that it contains the [lifterlms_my_account] shortcode. The integration pulls endpoint content from that page.
No activity posts appear
Check three things in order: the activity type is enabled in PeepSo → Configuration → PeepSo LifterLMS Addon; the PeepSo Activity component is active; and the event actually fired (enrolment through an admin “add student” action uses a different hook than a learner self-enrolling, and some older versions of the add-on only listened for the front-end hook). Update both plugins before reporting a bug.
Students are not added to the group
PeepSo Groups must be active and the course must have a group selected in its course settings. Group assignment happens on enrolment, so existing students enrolled before you mapped the group will not be added retroactively; add them manually from the group’s member management.
Styling looks off inside the profile
LifterLMS dashboard styles assume a full content column. Add a small CSS rule in Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS to set a max-width on .llms-student-dashboard inside the PeepSo profile container, or use a theme that styles both.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work with PeepSo’s LearnDash integration installed too?
Yes. They register separate tabs and separate activity types. Running both LMSs on one site is unusual, but nothing conflicts.
Does it need LifterLMS paid add-ons?
No. The free LifterLMS core provides courses, quizzes, certificates and achievements. Memberships are also in core, which is why the My Membership tab works without extra purchases.
Can learners share progress to other networks?
PeepSo’s own share options apply to the generated posts. For sharing outside the site, that is a PeepSo-level feature rather than something the integration adds.
Is the add-on still maintained?
It is a niche add-on, so it does not get the release cadence of our BuddyPress products. Before buying, check the changelog and the documentation site for the latest tested PeepSo and LifterLMS versions, and if you are on a newer release, open a support ticket with your plugin versions and we will confirm compatibility or schedule a fix.
Where to start
Install the add-on, switch on three profile tabs (Courses, Grades, Certificates), enable enrolment, completion and certificate posts, and turn quiz-failed posts off. Enrol a test member and watch the feed. Once that works, map each course to a PeepSo group so the conversation has a home. Everything else in the settings is refinement you can do once real students are on the site.
