BuddyPress · Free · Activity feed

The first thing a new member sees is friendship noise.

BuddyPress shows every activity type by default, so the feed opens on "X and Y are now friends" instead of anything worth reading. This sets what the feed shows by default, and hides the types you never want in it.

Needs BuddyPress. Version 3.2.0. Admin settings only, no code.

Three screens

Decide what the feed is for, then make it open that way.

Default Activity Filters

Set what the feed opens on

Two defaults, set separately: one for the site-wide activity stream, one for a member profile stream. Pick Everything, or narrow it to the single type that matters. Members can still change it afterwards using the filter BuddyPress already gives them.

Activity Types to Hide

Take types out of the feed entirely

Anything you never want surfacing, gone from the stream and gone from the filter list. New members, friendships, avatar changes, whatever your community treats as noise.

Custom Post Type Activities

Put your own post types in the feed

Any public custom post type can publish into the activity stream when a new entry goes live, with your own wording for the entry rather than the generic phrasing.

There is no paid edition. Set the defaults, hide what you do not want, and add your own post types.

Questions before you install.

  1. 01

What does it change for a visitor?

What the activity stream shows before anyone touches the filter. You set the default for the site-wide stream and, separately, for member profile streams. A member can still switch the filter afterwards using the control BuddyPress already provides.

  2. 02

Can I remove an activity type completely?

Yes. Anything you mark hidden disappears from the stream and from the filter list, so members cannot select it back. New members, friendships and avatar changes are the usual candidates.

  3. 03

Does it add my custom post types to the feed?

Any public custom post type can post into the activity stream when an entry is published, and you can write your own wording for that entry instead of the generic phrasing.

  4. 04

Can I show a custom post type in groups but not site-wide?

No. Custom post type activity is a single setting for the stream. There is no per-group scoping in this plugin.

  5. 05

Are there separate defaults for every page?

There are two: the site-wide activity stream and the member profile stream. Group streams do not get their own default.

  6. 06

Does hiding a type delete the activity?

No. The records stay in the database and stop being surfaced. Unhide the type and they appear again.

  7. 07

What does it need to run?

BuddyPress with the Activity component active. It works on BuddyBoss Platform as well.

  8. 08

    Is it really free?

Yes, and there is no paid edition. Use it on as many sites as you run.
