BuddyPress shows every activity type by default, so the feed opens on "X and Y are now friends" instead of anything worth reading. This sets what the feed shows by default, and hides the types you never want in it.

Three screens
Two defaults, set separately: one for the site-wide activity stream, one for a member profile stream. Pick Everything, or narrow it to the single type that matters. Members can still change it afterwards using the filter BuddyPress already gives them.
Anything you never want surfacing, gone from the stream and gone from the filter list. New members, friendships, avatar changes, whatever your community treats as noise.
Any public custom post type can publish into the activity stream when a new entry goes live, with your own wording for the entry rather than the generic phrasing.

Yes. Anything you mark hidden disappears from the stream and from the filter list, so members cannot select it back. New members, friendships and avatar changes are the usual candidates.

No. Custom post type activity is a single setting for the stream. There is no per-group scoping in this plugin.
