In previous articles in WooCommerce series, we discussed the steps to create your WooCommerce Store. We have so far discussed the products types you can sell with WooCommerce and various WooCommerce Payment Options. In this article, we will discuss How you can manage WooCommerce Product categories, Tags,  Attributes.

Let’s see what these terms and How you can add them to your products are.

1. Product Categories:

Product categories in WooCommerce help you to filter your products and group them in one place. For example, you want to sell clothing on your store you can categorize it in t-shirts, sweatshirts, Formal Shirts, etc. WooCommerce provides you this option with the help of Product categories.

You can as well add subcategories to your products as per your requirements. Let us check out how you can add Product categories:

  • Step 1- Login to your WordPress dashboard. Go to Products>> Categories. This will open the categories option for your products.

  • Step 2- You will find the following options:

Name: Here you will add the name of your category.

Slug: Slug is a URL friendly version of your name. You can add a slug in this option.

Parent Category: here you can choose the parent category from the drop-down menu. You can assign a parent category to create a hierarchy.

Description: Here you can add a description. The description is thus optional and will not be displayed by all the themes.

Display Type: Here you can choose what you have to show on the display page. If you choose “Standard,” it will display the theme’s default. If you choose “Subcategories,” it will display only the subcategories.  Choosing “Products,”  will display only the products and if you choose “Both,” it will display both products and subcategories.

Upload/Add Image: This is again optional and depends on themes. You can upload an image related to your product.

  • Step 3- Add the new category and your category will be added.

Now, Go to Products>>Add Product. Here you can select the category created from the category List displayed on the right side.

You can also Go to Products>>Add product and select Add New Product Category option to create a product category there itself.

2. Product Tags

Tags let you minimize the time spent by your visitors on searching for something. If you have appropriate tags, then the visitor can easily search on your website.
In WooCommerce, product tags help you to relate products to each other. This will help your customers to search their products with the help of those tags.
Let us see how you can add tags:

  • Step 1- Login to your WordPress dashboard. Go to Products>> Tags. This will open the tags option for your products.

  • Step 2- You will find the following options:

Name: Here you will add the name of your category.

  • Step 3- Add the new tag and your tag will be added.

Now, Go to Products>>Add Product. Here you can select the Tags created from the tags category List displayed on the right side.

3. Product Attributes:

Product attributes are very important for a store. If you are selling clothes of more than one color or size, then you need to add all that to your store. Product Attributes lets you add these additional details for your products and WooCommervce provides such option. Let us see How you can add Product Attributes.

WooCommerce provides you options to use these attributes in the shop sidebar using the “WooCommerce Layered Nav” widget. If you add this widget to your shop sidebar, your customers will be able to filter the products based on the provided attributes.Second Another method of adding the attribute is by creating Variable products.

For creating a variable product, you must add an attribute. You will find this option in the Add Product window. Here you can select the product type as Variable and Add an attribute from Attribute option. For more details, you can check here.

Now let us see How you can add product attribute step by step-

  • Step 1- Login to your WordPress Dashboard. Go to Products>> Tags. This will open the tags option for your products.

  • Step 2- You will find the following options:

Name: Here you will add the name of your category.

Slug: Slug is a URL friendly version of your name. You can add a slug in this option.

Enable Archives: This option lets you view a page with all the products having this product.

Type: This option lets you determine how you choose attributes for your product. If you choose Select, you will have the same attributes all over your store, and you can then Select attributes. Choosing text allows you to type new value to the attributes.

Default Sort order: Here you can choose the sort order of terms displayed in your shop. You can sort it via name, Numeric, term ID or Custom order. Custom Ordering lets you drag and drop the terms.

  • Step 3- Add the new attribute and your attribute will be added.
  • Step 4- Once the attribute is added, you can add terms for your attribute by selecting the Configure Terms Option.

Adding the attributes to your product.

Go to Products>> Add Products

Here, Select the Attributes option in the Product data. From Here you can choose the created attributes from the drop-down menu.
Add the Attribute.
If you have selected an attribute of the “Select” type, then you can add all the terms you added previously.
If you selected ” Text” type, then you can add terms manually.
